The theory or strategy chosen to resolve or manage a toxic nursing leadership problem is
Transformational Leadership. Transformational Leadership is defined as a leadership approach
in which leaders and followers engage in a mutual process of developing each other's
motivations, morale, and performance. This theory focuses on leaders' ability to inspire,
motivate, and guide their followers (Choflet et al.,2022). Characteristics of transformational
Leadership include: creating a shared vision, setting high standards, having a clear
communication style, providing recognition and rewards, and demonstrating empathy.
I chose this theory because it is the most effective approach for resolving or managing
toxic nursing leadership problems. Transformational Leadership helps to create an environment
of collaboration and trust, which can help to counteract the effects of a toxic workplace (Adams
et al.,2022). It also allows leaders to build relationships with their followers and provide them
with the support they need to be successful. Additionally, transformational Leadership can help
to foster a sense of accountability and ownership, which can help to address the underlying
issues behind a toxic leadership problem. Finally, transformational Leadership can help to build
a sense of purpose and commitment among followers, which is essential for addressing toxic
leadership issues.
Application of transformational leadership theory to resolve a toxic nursing
leadership problem
In Jackie's scenario, Transformational Leadership theory can be applied to resolve the
toxic nursing leadership problem. Transformational Leadership is a leadership style in which
leaders motivate and inspire followers by communicating a compelling vision and providing
individualized support (Bass & Avolio, 2022). Transformational Leadership is based on
Intervention Strategy
providing a clear vision and direction and inspiring others to follow by motivating and engaging
followers through empowerment, trust, and communication (Avolio & Yammarino, 2022).
The transformational leader can motivate and inspire Kyle to lead the team in the patient
care conference. Kyle can be empowered to take the lead in the conference and be given the trust
to make decisions. The transformational leader can also provide Kyle with clear instructions,
expectations, and performance feedback. Additionally, the leader can provide Kyle with the
necessary resources and support to effectively manage K. C.'s behavior.
